So you may be asking… “why the hell are you giving us all this damn information about yourself, can’t you just go on eHarmony or somethin?!” Well folks funny thing is this just might happen, but your girl is scared as hell!!!
So let me paint a picture for you… I am a 28 year-old African-American female, I live in South Minneapolis, go out on the weekends, workout, and my bills are paid on time. Seems like I got my shit together right… well let’s just pump the breaks on that comment! In my mind I should already be in a 2 year relationship, on the verge of getting engaged, traveling the world with my fiancé, and potentially talking about having one and a half kids (don’t ask why I wrote that, I just heard it from somewhere)!!! But I pride myself on being a strong independent woman, who doesn’t need a man for anything. I mean taking out the trash would be nice, but hell I need the extra exercise going up and down 3 flights of stairs!
I didn’t start to doubt this outlook on my life until I talked to my father. Going over to the house and having random conversations like we normally do… out of the blue he brings up eHarmony… yes you read that, eHarmony! I honestly thought I was doing okay in the dating department, but I guess my dad hasn’t seen actual evidence of this, so I let him continue on his little rant. He began to tell me to “just try it out” “maybe you’ll meet a Hispanic guy” “it’ll be good for you” “get some of your friends together and they can help you answer the questions”. Of course I just laughed it off and shrugged my shoulders and went about my day. It wasn’t until the next day I came back over to see my dad that I was bombarded with the same topic. My dad tells me “Bae you know you can get your mind off of things, I told you what to do, you know you should be having a baby.” That’s when all bets were off and I just had to stop him. I wasn’t ready for all of this, I thought I wanted a relationship, but now it just sounds like too much!!!
But in all of this, here lies the question… do I really NOT want to be in a relationship, but have all the men I’ve dated just conditioned me to think that I’m not datable or worthy to be in a committed relationship?! I came to this realization after talking to my cousin Kei (Kei Kei do you love me… sorry Kei I had to lol). She brought up the fact that in all actuality I am ready to be in a relationship, I am ready to find my soulmate, and that eHarmony may not be a bad place to start! I sat in the moment, CONFIDENTLY AWKWARD as ever and embraced all the possibilities that are yet to come.
Needless to say… some of you reading this, take that leap of faith, spend that $60, put all your business out there, have a realistic profile pic, and demand what you need in a partner. Let’s do this together… we all we got!
