Yeah, we’ve all been there right… not really sure what label or title to give the man or woman that you are seeing on a not-so-regular basis, you want to call them your boo-thang, but not sure if they deserve that title, or just someone you have a fling with from time to time and MAY get emotionally attached to them from time to time! Well I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone. If you’re not the type to put labels on things, well I’m here to tell you that the things that I described above… well that’s definitely a “SITUATIONSHIP.” And the fact that my autocorrect on my phone already had this in its own list of words, it’s just even more confirmation that this label has become normalized.
I had never heard of this word or didn’t hear of people bringing this word up until maybe about 3 years ago. The most of what my generation made reference to was this concept of “friends with benefits”, which I’ve been there maybe once or twice! Lol! So if you are still unclear about what a situationship is, Urban Dictionary can provide you with some context:
Example:
Me: Me and this guy have been talking for six months now.
Friend: Are you guys together?
Me: Its like were together but were not.. its more of a situationship that’s happening.
Just from that definition, I feel all types of confused and honestly that’s what a situationship is to me because at some point one person wants to move on or you think there might be hope that one day this “thing” could turn into “something”, like a relationship. When I was in my situationship, it didn’t start off like that, it was what I assumed dating was… texting, talking on the phone, and maybe seeing each other here and there. But when I started asking all the hard questions like “what is this”, “what are we doing”, “so that means you’re going to do what you’re going to do and then I can do the same thing right?” Everyone has been there, it’s like that in between stage as to where you end up staying single or it turns into a full blown relationship.
In my experience these types of situations should be talked about upfront and MEN, yes MEN, be upfront with your shit, if you want a situationship let it be that, but let’s us know! Don’t be mad when we post on Snapchat looking all good and you salty because I’m out here loving my best life. And this goes for ladies too because I’ve heard from some guys that women are just as bad or even worse at the whole situationship, dating, relationship thing; whatever title or label you want to put on it! When I got to a certain point in my “situationship” situations… I found myself becoming more emotional, more attached, and more like “I’m not about this life.” It can be fun for a while, but shit gets old… at least for me! And I’m not knocking anyone that is currently in that phase of their lives, but live your truth! Be honest and upfront with that person, it’s okay to hurt someone’s feelings, but at least you were upfront and didn’t leave any stone unturned. You owe it to yourself and that person!
This is a nonjudgmental zone, I know this peeps, but I gotta give you the real and to at least know what to expect in these situations. It’s hard to know what you want and what you are looking for in life, until you have been through some things and that may be the upside to situationships… it’s the transition point to getting to that relationship you want and ultimately knowing what you want out of a male or female. So take it will a grain of salt, have fun, live your best life! But know when it’s time to cut the situationship off because that title doesn’t last forever and can only go on for so long. I feel like for me since I’m 2 years away from being in my 30’s, it puts a lot of things into perspective for me and hey you may be in your 30’s or 40’s still in that mindset and that’s okay, but transparency is key because you never know there may be a guy or girl out there that’s okay with a situationship! You’ll never know if you don’t ask. But that’s the world we live in today, a lot of people are afraid of rejection, shoot I know at one point in time I was, but I got over that shit. I may have been down and sad for one day, but got over that shit the next day and went about my life because everything has a reason and some people are put in your life for just a season! Just continue to spread love and positive, and good vibes only peeps! So anyone in a situationship enjoy the ride while it last, just make sure you don’t get too dizzy or sick once it stops!
This is a safe, fun, and nonjudgmental space… use it for those purposes!
