Be My Valentine.

Yeah it’s that time of year again, February 14th is upon us. I can smell the anxiety in the air as I’m typing this blog. Oh shit my bad… hey y’all! What’s up my confidently awkward peeps?! It’s been a minute, but hey life happens and your girl has been a little preoccupied in her personal life, if you know what I mean (wink, wink) lol. So please forgive me!

But now back to the topic at hand… oh yes, I smell the anxiety in the air and minds going in circles about about Valentines Day… “Oh shoot I gotta make that damn reservation”, “Did I get her everything she wanted?”, “Man forget Valentines Day, it’s her day anyways… it ain’t like I’m gona get nothin”, or “Let me stop and get some candy and a card for my boo.”

I grew up with a mother that always expected there to be a card, some flowers, and jewelry on the table… nothing more, nothing less! And God forbid you didn’t make that reservation for that overly expensive restaurant where you get up from the table, pay your $100 bill, and leave hungry! Yeah, I’m sure you got a little irritated reading that (you know what else you could have bought with that $100?) But I digress. I feel like with this whole Valentine’s Day topic it’s pretty much damned if you do, damned if you don’t! Let me give you a few scenarios I’m sure you can relate to…

Scenario 1: Girlfriend loves Valentine’s Day and will cause a damn scene if there is no gift on the table waiting for her when she gets home from a hard days work. Yes, she got her boyfriend something, but the gift she is going to receive better be Snapchat and Instagram worthy!

Scenario 2: You have the boyfriend that doesn’t give a damn about Valentine’s Day. He gives the classic line of “Why do I need to show you I love and appreciate you on this one specific day, when I can just show you that everyday?” Or the guy makes a statement like “This is y’all day, the only day we get is our birthday or Father’s Day!” And in this case Valentine’s Day loses all of its meaning and at that point the girlfriend just gives up and says fuck it!

Scenario 3: This is for all my single women and men! You say fuck it and send yourself some flowers, a card and may just celebrate Galentine’s Day with your homies and call it a day. No room for lowering your expectations, or being let down when your significant other doesn’t meet your expectations! Lol

Given all of these scenarios I would say I’m somewhere in between all three and that is totally okay my confidently awkward peeps. I get the sense, after talking to numerous guys that I know, is that they are emotionally scarred by Valentine’s Day, whether they want to admit it or not. I think the guys in our life have PTSD (not to downplay those that have mental health issues, but for the purposes of this blog… I NEED TO STATE THIS to get my point across) from the experiences that they have had growing up seeing their parents and being in relationships where the woman always felt like this day was only about them and the guy just had to deal with it. For me, it comes natural to be a giver and I feel weird receiving gifts from someone, but I love the sentiment of both sides!

I was having a conversation with someone and I almost caved in about not wanting to celebrate it, but then I expressed that I wanted to celebrate them, shit I wanted to celebrate both of us! The tone of the conversation quickly changed and then we both got on the same page about how we wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day! So we went back and forth for about 20 minutes. Petty things came up like… “Damn it’s going to packed at the restaurants”, then I countered with, “Well let’s do something this weekend.” Then there was “Well damn we should save money” and then that was countered with “Well let’s cook at home and then go out and do a little activity.” And then finally I was hit with an “Okay that sounds good.” I was like damn that was easy… And instantly I felt the sense that this was a way that we both could be fulfilled, but at the same time not compromising what we believed in when it came to Valentine’s Day!

I know that sounds a little too good to be true, but y’all got to try it out for yourselves. Hopefully you both are working on your communication skills and something will stick for the both of you! If y’all don’t know by now peeps, your girl is a super optimistic person… so I believe in you, you can do it! Lol!

What scenario would you classify yourself, my confidently awkward peeps? Would you compromise for your significant other? Or maybe you just think this man made holiday is a bunch of BS and why would anybody write a blog about this?! Lol! Either way, I love you all the same and hopefully you can keep the conversation going with your friends, family, or significant other.

The title of this blog is Be My Valentine (period). It’s a statement not a question and that’s to say you all are my Valentine’s and I’m sending you cyber love and good vibes on Valentine’s Day and hope you spread that same energy… well actually, keep that same energy! Lol

This is a safe, fun, and nonjudgmental space… use it for those purposes!
